Five Steps To A Profitable Clothing Line

Today I’m coming at you with a quick list of the five steps it takes to create a profitable clothing line. I know it can be super overwhelming for someone that is just starting out and I find that breaking the work into manageable chunks helps to make it less overwhelming.

Five Steps To A Profitable Clothing Line

One | Concept

Start out by getting clear on your personal values and vision for your life. This will allow you to set goals that get you excited to create a PRODUCT and LIFE you love.

Check out the post on How To Generate A Product Idea You’re Crazy About to dig deeper. And be sure to download the free workbook.

Two | Prepare

Determine who your ideal customer is and the best business model to serve them AND your vision. Start the engagement process with them and create a brand presence that speaks to the them while you start to create your product.

Three | Create

This is the work of the work and the hardest for someone who’s never worked in fashion to navigate. Lucky for you, this is where the bulk of my knowledge is and the bulk of my resources. Creating your line includes designing, sourcing, developing, testing and producing your product.

Check out my post on 9 Things The Pros Ask When Fabric Sourcing. And don’t miss out on grabbing the free checklist in the Resource Library that you can take to your next fabric meeting.

Four | Launch

This is where you get the word out about your amazing product by setting up the right selling platform and letting people know about it. A HUGE component of launching and somewhere you don’t want to skimp is photography. Make sure that you’re getting both product shots that show the details as well as lifestyle shots that you can use for promotion.

Personally, I’m all about systems so I created an Instagram Monthly Planner, specifically for product businesses. This will help you plan out your content for a full month, set it and forget it.

Five | Monitor

Now that your product is selling, stay on top of inventory and get into the work of creating more of the right product for your customer. When you monitor what you’re selling you’re able to see if you are truly a profitable clothing line.

In order to help you understand how much profit you should be making on each style, check out my post, How To Calculate Gross Margin And Why You Should Care. I even created a SUPER easy tool for you to calculate the gross margin for your specific products.
